Did you know?- Iowa law bans yard waste from landfill.
- Yard waste must be separated from garbage
- Burning is discouraged because it caused air pollution. City ordinance does not allow open burning of yard waste. Please refer to city the City Ordinance for more information.
- City trucks will collect yard waste in 30 gallon biodegradable paper bags.
- Yard waste will be collected at the street curb, on your garbage collection day, April - November or until first snowfall.
- Compost is available at the landfill of North Iowa free of charge.
What can I do with leaves?- Compost at home. To receive information on composting at home, contact Cerro Gordo County Extension Office at 423-0844; Lime Creek Nature Center at 423-5309; or Landfill of North Iowa at 357-5452
- Drop off at landfill compost site (no charge) 15942 Killdeer Ave., Cerro Gordo County.
- Place at curbside on garbage collection day in 30 gallon biodegradable paper bags which are weather and animal resistant. Bags are available at grocery and retail stores.
What can I do with grass clippings?- Leave them on your yard. Does NOT cause thatch. Reduces amount of fertilizer needed.
- Use as mulch.

What can I do with branches?Do not place any branches of any size in biodegradable paper bags. Branches do not decompose and must be separated from leaves and grass.For branches smaller than 4 inches in diameter:- Chip for mulch.
- Tie in bundles
- Bundles can not be bigger than 18 inches in diameter or 4 feet in length.
- Do not use wire.
- Place at street curb on garbage collection day.
- Take to landfill.
For branches larger than 4 inches in diameter:- Chip for mulch.
