The 457 "Cannonball"  A premier display of a steam era locomotive located in East Park, Mason City, Iowa.


A gift to the children of Mason City. Sponsored by the Mason City Rotary Club in cooperation with the City of Mason City and the railroads serving the community. Built by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, NY in December, 1912, the locomotive is a type 2-8-0.

  • Width is 10.5 feet.
  • Height is 15.5 feet.
  • Donated to the City of Mason City and placed in East Park September 1959.
  • Preservation Project began 2003.
Friends of the 457 is a volunteer group working in conjunction with the Mason City, Iowa Park & Recreation Department to restore and preserve the locomotive.  It is the last known of its class to exist, and the only steam locomotive remaining from the M & St. L RR available to the public.
  • Dedication & Tours began May 14, 2005
  • Annual Cannonball Day celebration began June, 2006
