Flood Mapping Update - 2018

New Flood Maps for Cerro Gordo County

For the past several years, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have been working on a multi-county update of floodplain maps in the state.  The preliminary maps are now available for view on on FEMA's web site.  The agencies will co-host an Open House to present the preliminary floodplain maps to Cerro Gordo County citizens.  The meeting will be held at the Mason City Public Library Classroom, 225 2nd Street SE, Mason City, on Monday, June 25th, from 5:30pm – 7:30pm.  This meeting is open to the public.

The open house will provide property owners an opportunity to view the preliminary maps and learn how their flood risk may have changed.  Representatives from FEMA and the Iowa DNR will be on hand to answer questions and address residents’ concerns about the preliminary flood maps.

As a result of these map changes, some buildings in Mason City may, for the first time, be included in a high-risk flood zone, known as the Special Flood Hazard Area. This may result in those affected homeowners being required to purchase flood insurance.

The preliminary maps and the preliminary flood insurance study can also be viewed online at the FEMA Map Service Center here.  Mason City is mapped over 14 separate map panels.  To determine which map panel includes your property, use the index map below to find the panel number and then select the panel from the FEMA map page.  The panel number will be the community number, 190060, plus the panel number.
